Hi

The Time Warp

The time-travel photo
Sebastian Smith is is a deejay turned producer with an unusual timeline. His deejay activity under his real name of Bob Johnson, spanned 1964 to 1980, when he had residencies in the Birkenhead and Liverpool Cabin Clubs (Not to be confused with the Cavern). He started producing in 2007 when the production resources deejays have now became available to him. If those tools were available at the time of his deejay activity, things could have been very different.

In 1980, after his stint at the Cabin Club, he worked in various technical roles until 2014. His final role was a senior software developer in a top-secret government project, doing live support in a secure bunker. Music had to take a back seat in those days. When he retired at the end of 2014 he started doing what he always wanted to do - be a full time music producer. This is not something people should be doing at this time in life but Seb just carries on, even though he is now trapped in the 21st century, completely isolated and stuck in a different dimension.

Sebastian Smith is an independent music producer. Nobody tells him what to do. Nothing pushes him into a category. His music is varied and organic, but always accessible. His influences come from a lifetime of music but tend to gather round soul, rock, house, hardcore and techno.

Releases

Mobilise EP cover art.
The Mobilise EP was released on July 4th, 2020. It represents the darker side of Sebastian Smith's output. It has 5 tracks from various times in the artists career.
  1. Spin Doktor
  2. As you Said (Feat. None Like Joshua)
  3. Batería (Kick-Ass Remix)
  4. What You Always Wanted
  5. Warp Lane
This release was put out at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic with the philosphy that people at this time would feel more stimulated by confrontational music than by something pretty to help them escape. There was no escape, only a need to confront the situation.

Masquerade cover art.
The Electric Masquerade single was released on August 9th, 2019. It is a piece of pure escapism. The whole piece is tuned to the A at 432Hz. This is supposed to be a mystical frequency* that is a multiple of the fundamental "Om" of the cosmos. Music tuned to this frequency is supposed to have magical properties that fill the mind and soul of the listener with good vibrations. You probably will need calming down after hearing the Mobilise EP. This is one track that will do the job.

*If you don't believe me, just do an internet search for A432 tuning. You will be amazed.

The Bunker

Bunker detail photo.
What's in a Name?

For 20 years, Sebastian Smith worked as a software engineer on a top-secret government project. This was work for "Big Brother", so when choosing an artist name, Winston Smith obviously came to mind. The name Winston Smith though, had already been taken by another artist in the music industry but Sebastian Smith seemed just as good. Winston Smith's brother kind of thing.

The IT work was extremely complex and needed expert live support by people with a high level of security clearance. It was performed in a secure bunker in the middle of the computer suite. In 2015, the whole operation was given a major update, transferred to another secure location and the building housing the bunker where Sebastian Smith worked was demolished. Not the bunker though. It was a hard nut to crack and is still standing today, awaiting the specialists needed to dismantle it.

These photos show the bunker in the middle of the flattened demolition site and the escape hatch from the tunnel that was used to gain access from the main office block. The tunnel nearly always leaked in rainy weather so there was always a risk of it flooding.
